03022019 – Run and Ski

With 6 more inches of fresh snow, I didn’t want to be the first bike on the trails again so I opted for a run. Normally I’d run on the sidewalks and do a boring loop in the city, but this morning I went more adventurous and headed towards the trails. I figured rightly that I’d find some paths that were more packed down, but I guess wrong that the ski trails wouldn’t be groomed yet. So at times I ran in snow that was knee deep and some harder packed snow on the edge of the groomed trails.  Running back on the paved trails was a little bit better, but they hadn’t been plowed yet either. Since I had a little time and the trails were groomed I ran home and grabbed my skis. I walked back to the natural snow and started skiing.  The snow was a little soft and wasn’t easy to move on.  So I did a short loop and then headed over to the man made stuff. It was better, but they were getting ready for a race so I didn’t ski too much. I ended at the Drevil’s Drop and walked home.

3 miles running

2.4 miles skiing

I invited my Ohio family up for a picnic… they didn’t seem too interested.

02102019 – Run and Ski

To round out the trifecta of the winter tri, I did a run this morning before the snow hit! I grabbed my Yaktrax and headed out. This was my first outdoor run of winter and I almost headed into the park to try the non-ski trails but instead headed North on the streets and cut over after awhile to the Wirth Paved Trails. It was quite the mix of clear sidewalks, icy sidewalks, and completely untouched sidewalks. When I crossed Golden Valley Road I headed onto the trails and it was slow going as the snow hadn’t been packed down on them very much yet. It was a nice 4 miler in 41 minutes. The mile on the paved trail was 9:27 and the mile slugging through the unpacked snow was 11:05! After snowing all day and getting another 3-5 inches of snow, the ski trails weren’t in ideal shape. I ended up playing ski games with the kids during lessons and we got about 2k of skiing. I wore the classic skis as I figured they would be easier to use on the fresh powder.

01302019 – Run

I’m not completely crazy… I do have limits.  Like not running when the actual air temps are -34.  I’ve run when the wind chill is -34 before.  It was enough just to get bundled up for the quick drive to the gym!

I can’t actually remember the last time I ran on a treadmill.  I hate them so much, but I needed to run.  I went to the Minneapolis Bouldering Project and did a several routes as a warm-up and then did a 5k on the treadmill.  My Garmin has a treadmill function that ended up being about .1 off from what the actual treadmill said.  There were a handful of other people at the gym either climbing or lifting, but only 1 other person used any of the cardio equipment while I was there.  Pretty unexciting stuff – I listened to my podcasts (they don’t have TV’s) and used a towel to cover up the treadmill screen.

After the run I did a little pull-up complex and then some lunges to round out my morning before heading back out into the cold!

11242018 – Run

It was a nice morning to run.  Maybe the last warm-ish morning at 37f and pretty foggy. It had rained most of the night so it was pretty soggy on the trails so I was surprised to still see some ice on the trail.  It definitely felt more like a spring run than a fall one!   I was pretty stiff and sore from all the working out on Weds and Thursday but running actually felt good!

I ended up with 3.6 miles in 34:58.

11102018 – Run

We got a little bit of snow the last couple of days and we’ve had highs below freezing so the Loppet Foundation is starting to make snow.  I’m excited for ski season and got out to enjoy the beautiful weather.  It was about 10f with no wind.  As the man made snow area expands I won’t be able to run here any more so I enjoyed the scenery.  There is ice forming on some of the smaller ponds already too.  Some of the downhills were a little slippery and I slid down the hill by the staircase.

I did 3.3 miles in 33:24.
