04032018 – Run

Lots of fresh powder for this morning’s run! I think there was about 4 inches of fresh snow, but I still wanted to hit the hills of the trails. There was enough snow that I ran with a skier and his dog for a short bit! Look for him in the one picture!

The workout was a 6×300.  Given the snow it was more about effort level than a specific pace for me. It was fun to play in the snow a little bit too!  The total run was 3.94 miles in 43:33.

03312018 – Run & Climb

On the first day of Spring Break we woke up to 3 inches of heavy snow and strong cold winds! Not ideal conditions for a 4 mile Time Trial, but I went for it! The warmup and the first 2 miles were straight into the wind. I decided to run straight up my street and then go over to the parkway. Only 3 or 4 sidewalks had been shoveled yet and the streets and parkway hadn’t been plowed. Traction was pretty good throughout. The wind had created places that were almost snow free and then others where it was 3-4 inches deep. It was hard to know where the trail was on Victory Memorial Parkway, but I just ran between the lights! I extended the cool down a little bit by going on some single track. It felt like a reward for the hard work I had already put in!

I did the 4 miles in 34:06 or 8:31 pace. Total run was 5.88 miles in 54:47.

Victory Memorial Parkway, where do I run?

A mud puddle with pretty snow!

Updated: we went climbing this afternoon. I got some new climbing shoes, I think they helped! I was able to climb all the red routes I tried. I was having trouble starting one and a guy gave me a quick tip and boom I made it to the top. I definitely don’t have a lot of skill for some of the harder stuff, just height and strength which doesn’t work too much past the beginning routes!

Back to the colder weather for a 4×800. I stuck to the paved trails this morning to get better traction.  Today’s rest was 15 seconds shorter than last week’s 800’s. I know it wasn’t really that, but more related to the fatigue of life and the fact that I woke up at 4:30am to get the workout in that I really started to feel it.  The last two were really hard.  The 3rd one was the hardest as it included the climb to Golden Valley Road – I actually had to stop for a few seconds to catch my breath.  My stomach was also hurting by that point.  After finishing my last 800, I ran past a group of Sheriff’s getting ready for a pre-dawn raid.

Here are the splits:

3:38

3:44

3:59 (I think auto-pause saved my time on this one)

4:03

I did about a mile warmup and cool down for a total of 4.95 miles in 46:44.

03272018 – Running

This morning called for 6×300. I wanted some hills so I headed back into the muddy and snow covered trails. A lot of the trails still have snow pack on the treadway with mixed places of mud. I think most of the snow will be gone after this weekend and then we’ll have to wait for it to dry out.

I had to make a quick pitstop before starting the intervals! I also over estimated how far I would need for them and ended up being 2 miles from home at the end of the last one. Oops!

I did the Garmin correctly this morning and was able to get the correct intervals. Some of them started at the bottom of a hill and at least one started right in the middle of a mud patch!

The totals were 5 miles in 52 minutes.

Intervals were

03242018 – Running

I took Amber (the puppy) out for the run this morning.  It was a relatively easy run 80% of last week’s 2 mile Time Trial. So the goal pace was 9:30.  That seemed slow and the pace felt reasonable throughout the run.  I actually kept running faster than that!

I tried out a new leash with Amber that actually went around my waist and it felt great to not need to hold the leash.  She did fairly well of not pulling too much on me, but it was annoying when she did.  I need to make it a little looser so it will slide around my waist better as she runs behind and around me!

We tried out some trails and they are getting closer to being snow/ice free but it was touch and go in a few places – almost falling down. Amber definitely didn’t help with that!  My overall 5K was 28:20 which is 9:08 pace.  So a little faster than I was supposed to, but it felt good overall. It felt comfortable throughout.  Some of the icy patches obviously slowed me down quite a bit, but like I said there weren’t a ton of them and for the most part they were short. I did decide not to try one trail as it looked pretty icy and was going to be uphill.

Total run 4.9 miles in 47:35.  I did almost a mile warmup and then my 5k ended about a mile from home.
