Sign Up for 30 Days of Biking #30daysofbiking

For the past few years I’ve signed up for the 30 Days of Biking Challenge.  It is a great way to kick-off spring and there have been some really cool stories through the years of people being inspired to ride and having their lives changed.  I missed the inaugural event due to Lyme disease, but have participated every year since.

In 2012, I was doing Project 365 – taking a picture each day – and dedicated April to taking a bike related picture each day!

Registration for this year’s event opened on March 1 and I was rider number 265 to sign up!

Here is my confirmation:

And my “pledge card”!

Of course I’m dedicating my riding and running this year to raising money for clean water projects in the Congo.  Your support of any amount is greatly appreciated!

Blizzard People

PC124752Minneapolis got 17.5 inches of snow on Saturday.  That’s quite a wallop we are still collectively trying to dig out of.  Up until now, I’d been quite content without a snow blower, but now I’m thinking about it.  My dad offered me his, but its 10 hours away in Ohio. He also offered my his 4 wheeler with a blade on it, that’d be fun!

So the question is, how do you count snow shoveling as a workout?  I spent almost 2 hours yesterday scooping and throwing snow and another 45 minutes today (thanks to the townhouses in my alley for destroying my awesome shoveling job).  My shoulder is a little sore and I definitely felt it in my core.  So is it a cardio/core workout? Or just core?

How do you record snow shoveling in your training log? Do you record it at all?

I could just get one of these:

30 Day of Biking

30 Days of Biking is an idea started here in the Twin Cities to get people out on their bikes.  September marks round 2 of this attempt.  The initial 30 Days of Biking was in April of this year and had high turnout both locally and around the world.  Part of the success was using social media tools like Twitter and the #30daysofbiking hashtag, Dailymile and of course Facebook.

There is only one rule to 30 Days of Biking:

… you bike every day for 30 days—around the block, 20 miles to work, whatever suits you—then share your adventures online. We believe biking enriches life, builds community, and preserves the Earth.

Pretty simple eh? It should be fairly simple to get on your bike and pedal somewhere each day – work, grocery, friends house, down the street and back…

I wanted to participate in April’s event, but I wasn’t able to bike thanks to Lyme Disease! I’m excited to do it this time around.  Even though I already bike pretty much everywhere I think it will be a good challenge to actually make myself ride somewhere each day.

While you don’t need to, the organizers are encouraging everyone to register.  It is painless to register and you still have time to ride today!

City of Lake Loppet Videos

Below are a few videos I took while enjoying the 2010 City of Lakes Loppet.  Sadly, we didn’t actually make it to the cross-country skiing race on Sunday.  But we enjoyed a full day of activities on Saturday.

The Penn Ice Cycle Loppet is a big draw for us.  It is fun to watch cyclists trying to keep their bikes upright on ice. Race criterium style it was divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced men, followed by an all levels women’s race.  Videos are below in respective order.

Skijoring is fun to watch, partly because of the variety of dogs used.

Led by a Viking and some high school teams, kids 12 and under went for a 1 or 2k loop in the Minne-Loppet.

Our friends dog was enjoying the snow and ice.

Snowshoeing Minnehaha Creek

Another snow shoe adventure down Minnehaha Creek to the Mississippi River.  Warmer weather had made the creek unsafe to actually walk on for most of the trip, so that was a little disappointing.
