Rest

Today’s message at church was very timely, on the topic of rest. Not just sitting on the couch rest, but the need for Sabbath rest. Taking time regularly to recharge and reconnect not only with God, but also yourself.

A friend recently posted about rest on her blog. With two young children it is hard to find time of quiet rest. Additionally our crazy schedule with Christy’s work makes rest that much harder to truly find.

Rest is available we need to make time to find it. The Bible promises rest to the faithful. Maybe not the rest we think we need. We need to find margin and quiet and not fill it with noise or distraction.

I think one of the challenges of our schedule is the lack of consistency. Each week brings a different schedule and it is hard to find routine. I find routine and discipline refreshing, maybe not restful. With routine you can carve out your time and space.

Matthew 11:28-30 has helped me through other times like this. Here it is for you:
Matthew 11:28-30 NLT

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Uninspired – $1,000,000

I’m feeling pretty uninspired right now. I need to write a post to keep the the 30 day challenge. I really should write more about my Superior Hiking Trip, but that seems like a lot of work to sort through the pictures to post. I could write about this morning’s run, or something we did today, but none of that seems very post worthy or exciting.

I looked through a couple of sites I found that offer daily prompts. None of them seemed very exciting today. Until I found this simple question at dailypost. It is a no-brainer.

If I suddenly received $1,000,000 from an unknown aunt the first thing I would do would be to pay off all of our debt. So much of our life and energy is controlled by that debt that we could make some drastic changes to our life and feel a lot more comfortable. I know money isn’t everything and it won’t buy our happiness but getting out from the shroud of even our “good” debt (house, student loans, and a car) would return our lives to a more normal existence.

No more night shifts, no more endless weeks, more family time together when we aren’t half asleep!! What to do with the other $800,000 is a tougher question. Doing the math of Team World Vision that would provide clean water to 16,000 people! We could probably get our siblings out of their debt too… Who knows.

What would you do with an unexpected windfall?

Last Day of School!

Today was the last day of school for me. It was a pretty good day celebrating with the 8th graders who somehow managed to survive 3 years with us!! It is amazing how many memories you can garner in 3 years. One of the speakers at the promotion ceremony figured out that it is over 3,000 hours together and I don’t think that includes things like the Wolf Ridge trip or Spain where we are together longer than the regular school day!!

There could be so many stories to share about this group of kids and watching the annual video brought back lots of memories from not only this group, but from others as well. It is amazing to see how the tiny 6th graders grow and mature into “big scary” 8th graders! Each year it seems like it gets harder and harder to say good bye!

One of the unique characteristics of my job is that I work with all of our almost 800 kids and support all of the teaching staff which is close to 50 people. So while we were celebrating the 8th graders I was also preparing for the other 600 kids to have an awesome last day too. Groups went to local parks and to the local movie theater.

I also had the privilege of taking 6 of my Bike Club kids on a final bike ride for the year! We went to Dairy Queen, saw the Minnehaha Falls, and Wabun Picnic Area. I also let them ride down the huge hill next to the Lock and Dam. One of the kids on the way back to school said, “Mr. Cross sure knows how to end the school year!”

My only regret is that I don’t have the time or energy to reflect back with many of the kids on their progress and growth during the year or the last few years. But all in all it was a successful school year.

Summer Plans…

What are your plans for summer? This is a good question to ask middle schoolers. You can’t ask too early or they might not stop thinking about summer. But honestly, after spring break many people at a school can’t help but think about it! And we spend a lot of time planning for next school year too.

This summer I am working part time at summer school with Community Education. I will be teaching a bike class which hopefully means a fun summer on the bike! We will do some basic bike maintenance,  riding skills, visit a bike shop or two, weekly rides, a service project, and maybe some type of advocacy project. It’d be great to pair up with Open Streets but none of them work for our timing.

We are sneaking away for at lesst one camping trip up North and maybe one at a near by park that I can slip unto town for work and back out.

I don’t have any races on the calendar except for the Minnesota Half on August 2 and the Powderhorn 24 on August 15-16.

Runners vs Bikers: A Day at the Lake

Why is there so much tension between bikers and runners? As a member of both communities I understand a little of both sides.  Yesterday was a great example of why we often don’t get along.

A friend and I were going for a ride – I was towing the kids in the trailer and decided to do the lakes, Minnehaha Parkway to River Road, and Greenway loop.  It is a 20 mile loop that I’ve ridden quite a bit. As we crossed Lake Street at Dean Parkway we decided to stay on the Bike Trail (which goes clock-wise around Calhoun) instead of the road (which goes counter-clock-wise).  There was quite a bit of vehicle traffic and the bike path seemed safer.

BAD DECISION!

The road would have been a lot easier and ultimately safer.  We quickly ran into a ton of runners and walkers who were blocking the entire path. It took us 30 minutes to go the 4 miles from the top of Calhoun to the Minnehaha Parkway exit of Lake Harriet.  I can run that fast – in fact a runner was being a jerk and kept trying to pass us as we weaved through people.

I will say it isn’t 100% the runners/walkers fault as the “pedestrian” trail hasn’t been snow plowed.  But walking 3-4 abreast and not moving for oncoming cyclists is their fault.   The Park Board wisely only plows the bike paths in the winter.  I think this is an efficient use of resources and data probably supports that the number of pedestrians and riders during the winter month justifies only having the 4-6 foot wide path plowed.  Unfortunately, the pedestrian trail still has significant snow covering and has large sections that are impassable.  The Park Board could easily spend 2 hours and knock out all the snow covered areas by plowing it early on morning or overnight.

USE YOUR HEAD!

People walking and running with headphones couldn’t hear me calling “on your left” and were often walking in the center of the trail.  One guy with a hoodie on still never heard or acknowledged my presence until I was in front of him.  A few times a runner moved to pass a group of people without looking to make sure no one was coming on the left and we almost hit them.

I get that you want to chat with your friend, partner, etc. But bikes, especially ones with trailers take up quite a bit of space and should be given room to pass.  Zigging and Zagging between huge groups of people is tedious work and I’m sorry if you have to step into a puddle, but I don’t have a lot of choices.  I am pretty sure that I hit 3 people with the trailer.  I didn’t do it intentionally nor am I proud of it, but I can only do so much.

We caught up to a group of unicyclists who were doing an amazing job of navigating through the congestion without falling off.  We also caught up to a small family with a young girl (elementary age) who was skillfully navigating her bike through the people with the mom right behind her with a trail-behind attached. It wasn’t a pleasant experience for any of us.

We were trying to be careful, but for the most part the runners and walkers didn’t react to our presence until we forced them to move. We all need to compromise – maybe you can walk single file instead of 2-4 people wide in a group.  Also runners as you pass people in either direction make sure that you can see what is happening around you and look behind you.

We all need to work together until the snow melts off the pedestrian trail.  Or until the Park Board takes 2 hours and clears the remaining snow!

Sadly, this is currently exaggerated due to the snow, but it is a year round problem with runners using the bike path to avoid the congestion walkers create.  As a runner I appreciate the fact that you get a better workout on the bike path but as a biker it is quite annoying to have to dodge runners ( and sadly walkers) who are running on the bike path.  Many of these people are wearing headphones and are clueless to their surroundings.

I appreciate the people who walk/run against the flow of traffic so they can at least move out of the way.  I personally avoid running around the lakes and will now avoid biking them except for early in the morning!!
